BE-PRESSION by Banele Khoza: An exhibition by Nil Gallery

18 - 28 June 2022

Banele Khoza is a talented, emerging South African artist born in Swaziland.

He has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Gerard Sekoto Art Award in 2017 and a solo exhibition at the Zeitz Mocaa Museum in Cape Town. His works address issues of masculinity, sexuality, and gender through an examination of blurred figures that convey emotions such as anxiety, intimacy, desire, and fragility. Khoza employs a range of techniques, including lithography, acrylic inks, and graphic sketching, to create intimate and vulnerable pieces with a diary-like quality.

The artist's style is influenced by both Modernist color field paintings and the work of Michel Basquiat, and his works reflect a sense of emotional and physical liberation. Having faced challenges in his early life, including displacement from his home country, Khoza founded the BKhz Foundation to support art students in South Africa.

Nil Gallery has the great pleasure to inaugurate "BE-PRESSION", the first Parisian solo show of the young artist Banele Khoza.
