The dynamism and excitement of the Ghanaian figurative movement in recent years has almost made us forget all the alternative and no less interesting ways of the local scene.
Within this movida popularized by the great names of portraiture from the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra, (Amoako Boafo, Kwesi Botchway, Otis Quaicoe) the modernist flat tints of Kpe Innocent, stand out.
Behind the apparent minimalist naivety of his work, strongly inspired by Bahaus and its philosophy, Kpe studies the geometry of the human soul, and invites the viewer to contemplate a refined painting to remind us to never lose sight of the essential.
The artist's gimmick: a colossus with rounded and generous forms is totally weighted down; a strange sensation of lightness and floating emanates from it.
The members of the body have no mutual dependence, as for their clothing style, it is the only notable element in terms of temporality, placing the works in the context of our contemporary time.
This universal character, straight out of a construction game, is the allegory of cultural identity in continuous transformation. To the notion of movement in identity is opposed the immutable place and utility of each in the great puzzle of humanity, which Kpe celebrates through titles deliberately evocative of positive thinking.
Nil Gallery is pleased to present "You - Artfully Crafted, A Masterpiece", the artist's first exhibition in France.
The opening will take place on Thursday, June 30th in the presence of the artist.
