Biography

"What fascinates me is working with materials.

I use ink and acrylic, and I'm sensitive to the balance between the two. I aspire to capture emotions and let the viewer take hold of them, as in a mirror effect. To achieve this, I am constantly on the lookout for the accident, the breaking point, where everything can fall apart. I'd like to reveal the invisible.”
- Simon Buret

Simon Buret (French, b. 1981) is a multidisciplinary artist whose evocative work spans painting, drawing, and mixed media. His artistic journey began with studies at the Auguste Renoir Art School in Paris, followed by formative years in the Beaux-Arts workshops in Brussels. These experiences laid the technical and philosophical groundwork for his distinctive approach, blending rigorous skill with an introspective, emotionally charged vision.

Buret’s life across France, Greece, and North Africa has deeply influenced his art, resulting in a style that merges vibrant abstraction with poignant themes of human vulnerability, resilience, and the balance between strength and fragility. Known for his embrace of spontaneous techniques, Buret often incorporates unconventional materials such as grease pencil and coffee grounds alongside oil and acrylics. This approach, balancing harmony with chaos, creates richly textured works that invite viewers into contemplation.

Buret’s art is often described as an invitation to meditate on life’s complexity. His poetic approach captures the tensions and harmonies within human experience, prompting reflections on identity, transformation, and the spiritual connections that shape our world. For Buret, painting is a deeply personal act—a “small prayer, an offering to the eye that lingers upon it.” His works thus become contemplative spaces, resonating with emotional depth and inviting viewers to explore the unseen layers of their own experiences.

In 2023, Buret exhibited at Sotheby’s Paris, an opportunity that introduced his work to an international audience and solidified his standing in the contemporary art scene. His solo exhibition, "Les Prières", at Nil Gallery in Paris in 2024, further cemented his reputation, allowing audiences to experience his deeply introspective pieces firsthand. Through his unique blend of materials, poetic sensibility, and introspective vision, Buret continues to build a dynamic and reflective body of work that speaks to the profound nuances of human emotion and existence.
