Biography
'My art is a reflection of my soul, an offering to the world, and a reminder that transformation and healing are always possible. Through my sculptures, I seek to reclaim the objects and words that have been used to oppress and dehumanize people of color for generations. I want my art to empower and uplift those who have been marginalized, and to inspire hope and resilience in the face of adversity. My hope is that my art can be a catalyst for change, a spark that ignites a movement towards a more just and equitable world.' - vanessa german
vanessa german, a self-taught artist born in Milwaukee (US) in 1976, defies societal labels and stereotypes through her vibrant mixed-media sculptures. Using recycled materials, she recreates Congolese Nkisi sculptures, crafting narratives that challenge perceptions of race, gender, and identity. Facing discrimination as an Afro-American woman, German embraces her identity, using art as a powerful medium for social commentary.
Celebrating marginalized communities, her work highlights the resilience and strength of individuals facing societal injustices. Recognized for her impactful art, which contributes to a nuanced understanding of inclusion and diversity, her work is in esteemed collections, including the Crystal Bridges Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Recently awarded the 2022 Heinz Award for the Arts, she showcased her work in a group show on the National Mall in Washington DC a few months ago.
