From September 19 to 23, Nil Gallery presents a compelling group show at Art Athina, featuring the dynamic works of Gommaar Gilliams, Sara Benabdallah, Dimitris Gketsis, and Matt Macken. This exhibition brings together four contemporary artists whose distinct practices explore complex themes, inviting viewers into a rich and thought-provoking experience.
Belgian artist Gommaar Gilliams (b. 1982) leads with a vibrant exploration of color, form, and texture. Educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Gilliams creates abstract compositions that immerse viewers in a meditative space where nature and spirituality intersect. His ability to evoke emotional depth through dynamic forms and layered colors has made him a significant figure in contemporary art.
Greek sculptor Dimitris Gketsis (b. 1993) complements Gilliams’ abstract approach with intricate, narrative-driven works that weave together mythology, identity, and modern socio-political concerns. His sculptural pieces, grounded in classical traditions yet engaged with contemporary issues, offer a powerful dialogue on memory, transformation, and cultural heritage. Gketsis’ use of diverse materials and detailed craftsmanship amplifies the thematic richness of the exhibition.
Moroccan artist Sara Benabdallah (b. 1995) introduces a deeply introspective element through her photography, exploring cultural narratives and social issues. Her series ‘Al Astrulabiya’ celebrates Arab astronomy, while ‘Dry Land’ addresses the challenges faced by Moroccan women, blending tradition and innovation. Benabdallah’s work invites reflection on gender and societal norms, adding a poignant social commentary to the exhibition.
Matt Macken (b. 1986, UK) brings a unique abstract-figurative approach that bridges emotional and intellectual realms. His vibrant canvases delve into the tension between human consciousness and disconnection from the environment, creating intimate visual dialogues that resonate with viewers’ deepest emotions. By accessing a reality beyond intellect, Macken’s work fosters a sense of vulnerability, encouraging audiences to explore their own inner worlds. His exploration of identity, anxiety, and transformation enriches the thematic diversity of the show.
Together, Gilliams, Gketsis, Benabdallah, and Macken offer a multifaceted exploration of contemporary art, from abstract expression and mythological storytelling to cultural introspection and emotional depth. This group show at Art Athina promises an immersive experience, highlighting the diverse ways in which art engages with our world.
